Sonos Announces the new Sonos Sub mini

Sonos has finally confirmed the rumours of a new compact subwoofer and officially announced the launch of their new Sonos Sub Mini. The £429 Sonos compact subwoofer will launch on the 6th of October 2022 and joins the recent launch of the Sonos Ray soundbar in extending Sonos’ catalogue to more entry-level home cinema options (a welcome shift for those of us feeling the pinch at the moment).

The Sonos Sub Mini has been positioned as the ‘little brother’ to the powerful Sonos Sub (Gen 3) which, with a higher price point of £749, has been harder to justify for smaller spaces or when paired with one of the more affordable Sonos speakers/soundbars. Sub Mini might, therefore, be the solution many Sonos users have been waiting for. With some interesting capabilities, this new Sonos launch has the potential to level up your Sonos setup (and we’re not just talking about home cinema) in unexpected ways!

Compact Design, powerful internals

Traditionally subwoofers are a big, black box which can be hard to blend into your space. Sonos have moved away from that aesthetic with the Sub Mini boasting a curved, cylindrical design intended to look good from any angle. Meanwhile, the compact size of the Sub Mini helps it remain unobtrusive in your room.

Sonos Sub Mini White Lifestyle Living Room

Available in both Black and White and boasting the now classic Sonos minimalistic design, Sub Mini matches the style of recent launches like the Sonos Ray.

Taken from the Sonos Sub (Gen 3), the Sonos Sub Mini features a centre tunnel designed to move air efficiently and boost bass performance while the cabinet remains acoustically sealed for optimised acoustics. Two Class-D digital amplifiers power dual 6” woofers which are faced inwards to create a force-cancelling effect, neutralising cabinet buzz for zero rattle or distortion.

Advanced DSP (Digital Signal Processing) helps Sub Mini to maximise the bass response and produce full-toned low frequencies expected from a much larger subwoofer. We are excited to test performance in our studio and will share our verdict in our upcoming review.

Recommended Sonos Sub mini pairings

The Sonos Sub Mini pairs with most amplified Sonos products but only if they are running on the Sonos app S2 software.

Sub Mini pairs with other Sonos speakers via its built-in 5 GHz WiFi connection for an enhanced audio transmission speed which will ensure no lag or dropouts.

Sub Mini Elevates The Whole System

One really exciting capability worth highlighting is that the Sub Mini elevates your whole system in more ways than one. First and foremost, it takes the load of the lower frequencies for an enhanced bass performance but that then also frees up some processing power in the paired speaker so that it can deliver a better performance on the other arrays. This means you should notice a step up in more than just the added bass.

The new Sonos Sub Mini is also individually tuned for the speaker it is paired with. It will automatically recognize which Sonos speaker, soundbar or component it has been paired with and adjust performance accordingly.

We, therefore, see Sub Mini elevating your Sonos setup whether it’s a home entertainment set, a pair of Sonos Ones in a stereo pair or even a gaming setup. Sonos Trueplay Tuning technology can be used with the Sub Mini to ensure audio performance is optimised for your space.

Sonos Sub Mini vs Sonos Sub (Gen 3)

Sonos Sub Mini vs Sonos Sub (Gen 3)

We will be carrying out an in-depth comparison between the Sonos Sub Mini and Sonos Sub (Gen 3) in our upcoming review. However on paper, both the Sub Mini and Sub (Gen 3) state they can achieve a frequency response as low as 25Hz which is close to the lowest frequency a human ear can hear at 20Hz. Sonos have said that while both will offer a similar performance and dynamics at lower volumes, the total power is the big difference and the Sonos Sub (Gen 3) has a lot more power to give at higher volumes.

In general, Sonos are recommending opting for the Sub Mini if you have a small-medium sized space or listen at lower volumes. If you’ve got a larger space with a Sonos Arc for example and like to listen loud, then you’ll get a better experience with the Sonos Sub (Gen 3).

Sub Mini FAQs

Can you pair 2 x Sonos Sub Mini?

Unfortunately, unlike the Sonos Sub (Gen 3), you cannot pair two Sonos Sub Minis in one setup. This is something we were hoping for but currently, is not an option. If you feel your space would benefit from a dual subwoofer setup then you will need to opt for 2 x Sonos Sub (Gen 3).

Where should you position the Sonos Sub Mini?

While the Sub (Gen 3) can be positioned either vertically or horizontally, the Sub Mini must be stood upright. However, due to the smaller footprint and more compact design, you have more flexibility with where you can place it in your room.

initial thoughts

The Sub Mini is bound to be a popular product launch for existing and new Sonos users, providing extra bass and enhanced low end performance for a range of setups at a lower price point. We are eager to test it out and compare it with the Sonos Sub (Gen 3) so stay tuned for our upcoming review for more.

The Sonos Sub Mini will be available for pre-order (from the 20th September) for delivery on launch day, 6th October.
