Sonos Play: What It Is and How It Works
Got your hands on the Sonos Play? This guide covers everything you need to know, from the basic controls and Bluetooth pairing to battery settings, voice control and advanced features.
Whether you're using it around the house or taking it on the go, here’s how to get the very best performance from your new portable Sonos speaker.
Getting Started
Sonos Play: Overview
The Sonos Play is built to give you proper Sonos sound in a speaker you can take almost anywhere. It combines powerful stereo audio, up to 24 hours of battery life and a rugged, portable design, making it a great fit for both home listening and life on the move.
For a speaker of its size, the Play delivers impressively big sound, with deep bass, clear detail and automatic tuning that helps optimise performance wherever you place it. Whether you’re listening indoors, out in the garden or away for the weekend, it’s designed to sound consistently good.
Its long battery life means you can keep the music going for up to 24 hours, and recharging is simple thanks to the included charging base. Sonos has also made the battery replaceable, which adds a useful layer of longevity.
The Play is also designed to be genuinely versatile. WiFi gives you the full Sonos experience at home, including multi-room listening, while Bluetooth lets you stream easily when you’re out and about. It’s tough too, with IP67 water and dust resistance and a durable build that can better handle everyday knocks, splashes and outdoor use.
If you’re deciding where Play sits in the wider range, our guides to the best Sonos speakers to buy and Sonos Roam 2 vs Move 2 are a useful next step.
There are a few extra touches that make it even more useful. You can group up to four Play speakers over Bluetooth for bigger sound in places without WiFi, and the USB-C port can even be used to charge your phone when needed.

Sonos Play: Advanced Features
Trueplay™ and Auto Trueplay
Every room is different. Trueplay tuning measures how sound reflects off walls, furnishings, and other surfaces in a room, then fine tunes your Sonos speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you've placed it.
Portable Sonos products like the Play can tune themselves automatically. Auto Trueplay uses your speaker's microphone to detect the environment and make periodic tuning adjustments so you get great sound wherever your speaker is.
- Select Settings.
- Choose the product you want to tune.
- Select Trueplay, and turn on Auto Trueplay.
Set Up Stereo Pair
Pair two Sonos speakers in the same room for an even wider, stereo experience. One speaker serves as the left channel and one serves as the right channel. The Sonos speakers in a stereo pair must be the same type.
- Place the speakers 8 to 10 feet apart. Your favorite listening position should be 8 to 12 feet from the paired speakers.
- Open the Sonos app, and go to Settings.
- Choose one of the products you want to use in the stereo pair.
- Select Set Up Stereo Pair to get started.
Grouping Out of the Home
You can group your Play speakers on the go. When your speakers are close together, start content on one speaker, then press and hold the play/pause button on another to play them together. You can press and hold the play/pause button on your speakers to add or remove them from a group.
Care
Sonos Play: Maintenance and Safety
Drying Your Play
Play has an IP67 rating, which means it is dustproof and water resistant and can be submerged in water up to 3 ft (1 meter) for several minutes.
- If your speaker is submerged in any liquid other than tap or rain water, flush the speaker with tap water, then give it a quick shake.
- Position the speaker vertically until it drains, then place it face down (logo side down) on a dry towel for a few minutes.
- Start some music to help drive moisture out of the acoustic drivers.
- Let the speaker air-dry to remove any excess water. Make sure Play is fully dried off in between uses. Don't use a hair dryer or other forced hot air to dry your product.
Important: Don’t play audio when the speaker is immersed in water.
Important Safety Information
- Caution: Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type.
- Clean only with a dry soft cloth. Household cleaners or solvents can damage the finish on your Sonos products.
- Sonos products with rubber rings on the bottom may leave a faint ring on some surfaces treated with polyurethane. This ring can be easily removed by wiping with a damp cloth.
- Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus that produce heat.
- Do not expose batteries to excessive heat such as sunshine or fire.
- Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
